Why Office Romances Should be Allowed to Blossom Office romances take place in every workplace, no matter where in the world you are. Some last a lifetime, literally, while others fizzle out often causing an awkward atmosphere in the office for a while. But is it really a sackable offence to get into a relationship with a co-worker? Recent research commissioned by Perkbox has found that well over half of UK employees (63%) believe having a workplace romance shouldn’t be a sackable offence. Of this figure, 37% believe employers shouldn’t have a say over their personal lives, while 28% say a workplace romance should be accepted if it’s genuine.   The research, which polled 1,000 working Brits, found that only 13% of employees believe a work romance between employees at different levels e.g. manager and reports, should be sackable, while 22% believe the only exception would be if it’s explicitly included in one’s terms of employment. What’s more, it appears that a blurred professional and personal life isn’t something of concern to many, only 24% of respondents believe this to be unhealthy. These lenient inclinations align with how comfortable working Brits seem to feel admitting to having had a workplace romance themselves. In fact, 31% go as far as saying they’ve cheated on a partner with a co-worker. On top of that, 39% of employees say either they or a close colleague of theirs has been caught at work kissing an employee. This may help explain why 29% of working Brits say they have left a job because of a workplace romance. When it comes to the age for workplace romances, 63% of respondents say their first one occurred when they were aged 30 or younger, whilst 34% say it was when they were between the age of 18-24. According to employees, 44% of workplace romances last between one and six months. “With the average person spending 90,000 hours at work over their lifetime often equating to more time with work colleagues than family and friends, it makes sense that a certain amount of workplace romances will develop in your organisation. The key is making clear to your employees from the outset what company policy or social norms should pertain around this.” Maddie Pozlevic, Employee Experience Lead at Perkbox Finally, the research concluded that even for working Brits who haven’t had a workplace romance, the temptation is still there. 75% of employees have admitted to having had a crush on a colleague and kept it a secret. What’s more, 32% say they recognise this has happened to them more than once. On the other hand, half of Brits say they wouldn’t judge a colleague for embarking on a workplace romance, though 45% feel that working with a partner themselves would destroy their relationship. Get Clear on Your Vision. At the beginning of the year, one of my goals was a new look for my brand. Before you start taking action, ask yourself: What do you want to create in the future? Where do you want to be in 5-10 years? Why will this project help you reach your long term goal? You have to know. There was a time when I thought it would never ever end and I regretted doing the project. But at the end of the hard work, I am so happy I did it. The only reason I was able to push through the hard times was because I knew my why. This wasnt about me, it was about you guys. That is what kept me going. 2. Ask for Help. Ive DIYd everything for the last 10 years. We did okay, but I knew I needed help to do this. To reach your next level, you cant do it by yourself. To get from here to there, ask yourself who do I need help from? I invested thousands of dollars, but I know it will pay off in the end. So you have to be willing to invest, but you have to know how its going to pay off. Dont do it if it wont pay off. But, I knew this would help us help our customers more and improve retention. I know all this will be worth it. 3. Always Work by Priorities. There are so many things we could do every day, we have to stay focused on only what we should be doing. Every day, every week, every 90 days, I constantly worked by deadlines to get the project done. And I managed the teams deadlines to ensure everything was being done on time, too. Versatile Bloggers That Will Help Make the Best Better Recently I have been meeting a number of AMAZING people, many of them bloggers, who are putting out some really special content on their sites. One such blogger was Deeone Higgs from Kingskidd Chronicles.   He started his site earlier this year after his mom died of cancer.   From that tragedy, he was encouraged to return to his passion of writing.   He shares his discoveries, humor, and encouragement with the hope that he can help others through their challenges and journeys. Ive been inspired by his writing and was greatly honored last week when he awarded my work here with the Versatile Blogger award.   Some of you have also been awarded this honor so Im glad to share this privilege with so many other great bloggers. If you arent familiar with the Versatile Blogger award it is an honor shared with blogs you have recently found as noteworthy, remarkable, and worth visiting. 7 Things About Me The first thing you are asked to do in acceptance of the Versatile Blogger award is to share 7 things about yourself.   Since another blogger has taken the time to share my site with his audience, the least I can do is tell the new visitors a little about myself. So here it goes, heres some things about me you probably didnt know. 1.   Im a two time cancer survivor. I was first diagnosed with Leukemia when I was 8 years old.   I was a poor little bald boy who couldnt have looked sadder in their fourth grade class photo.   It was taken 3 seconds after an insensitive photographer told me I couldnt wear my hat.   My teacher gave that guy an earful afterwards.   A few years later my cancer relapsed.   My only chance of beating it was a bonemarrow transplant. My sweet little 7 year old sister Katie prayed faithfully every night that God would make her a match, while I stubbornly hoped I wouldnt have to move to Tucson to go through the ordeal of more cancer treatment.   My sisters prayers were heard and she ended up being my bone marrow donor almost 14 years ago. 2.   Im a nerd. I am that guy that actually walks into comic book stores, plays Starcraft with friends on Friday nights, and is fascinated by shows like The Guild, Lost, and Avengers: Earths Mightiest Heros. 3.   I love Marketing. I graduated from W.P. Carey School of Business at ASU with my degree in Marketing.   Since then Ive been involved in sales and marketing.   I got my start working with Microsoft, training retailers how to sell Vista and Office 2007.   (Must not have been that good ??   )   I also worked with Dell in college promoting laptops through gaming events, kiosk implementations, and tabling.   Marketing has been a part of me my whole career and I dont see myself changing that any time soon. 4.   Im married to an amazing woman. Callie is my wife (the other person in my profile photo).   She suffers from a very tough illness called P.O.T.S.   You know all those automatic things that happen in our bodies like blood pumping properly, your respiration, or the way you process food?   Well her autonomic nervous system doesnt work.   So she has very little energy, gets sick constantly, and passes out when it gets particularly rough.   Still she troops through it working as a hair stylist and taking care of the house. 5.   I love movies. When the movie season is upon us Callie and I are almost at a movie every weekend.   We like dates, and movies are something we both enjoy.   If you want to know about a movie that just came out, chances are I can help you. Thats Bigby. Hes named after the big bad wolf from the graphic novel Fables. 6.   We take care of a monster. Well not really, but the way Bigby our lab can swing his tail knocking off anything set on a counter makes him sure seem like one.   Rawr Ill show you papers and cups what happens when you go up against the might of Bigby! 7.   Im a Mormon. As employers have been gradually adding jobs or loosening hiring freezes, it’s become a seller’s market for job seekers. But before you start rubbing your hands together gleefully, exclaiming, “Laissez les bon temps roulez!” (“Let the good times roll,” for those of you who haven’t been to New Orleans before), there are few things you should know before considering a job move. Know your value, but don’t piss off recruiters or hiring managers during a 2016 job search. They have long memories, and also talk amongst themselves.  So yeah, you might be courted by multiple employers to come work for them, but don’t tease them if you really have no sincere interest. And be smart before you try to play them off of each other. Most industries are becoming even more incestuous during a 2016 job search. Because everyone is feeling safer about making a job move now that things are relaxing more in terms of available opportunities, it doesn’t mean that people are going far. So to the point above about how people talk? Yeah, that. Remember that you should always treat everyone with respect because you never know who might be the decision maker. They are making moves too, and you could find yourself talking to a person you ticked off when they worked at a different company. Continue to be frustrated with applying online.   No technology service provider has completely figured out how to use software to make the hiring process easier.
